Grant Opportunities
The Finnish Foundation for Information Technology Research supports and promotes research, education, and advisory activities related to information technology. The foundation provides research and project grants, as well as awards recognizing exceptional contributions, such as the annual prize for the best doctoral dissertation in information technology. The foundation plays a significant role in fostering national expertise, advancing research, and initiating socially impactful projects. The activities of the foundation have expanded through substantial donations and consistent fundraising.
Thematic Grant Call
In 2025, the Finnish Foundation for Information Technology Research will award thematic project grants totaling up to 20,000 euros. This amount may be distributed among one or several projects. Funded projects may involve academic research, technological advancement, product development, or business development.
The special theme for 2025 is the responsible use and development of artificial intelligence. The aim is to encourage ethically sustainable applications of AI, considering its societal and environmental impacts. Projects that propose innovative solutions supporting responsible AI usage and help identify and minimize potential risks are particularly encouraged. Continuous Grant Call
The foundation continues to fund projects through an ongoing open application process, prioritizing multiple smaller projects over fewer large-scale initiatives. Travel Grants
Travel grants are available on a limited basis. Generally, business travel is not funded, and costs are reimbursed based on reasonable actual expenses incurred. Awards for Outstanding Achievements
The Finnish Society for Computer Science has traditionally appointed a jury and nominated the best doctoral dissertation for recognition by the Finnish Foundation for Information Technology Research. In 2025, the foundation plans to award the best dissertation nominated by the Finnish Society for Computer Science with a 5,000 euro prize. Additionally, the foundation may give 1–2 honorable mentions, each accompanied by a 1,000 euro prize.
